When reading their mother’s will in Montreal, twins Simon and Jeanne discover that they have a brother, and that their father – whom they believed was dead – is still alive. Their mother’s last request is that they deliver a letter to both their long-lost brother and father. Unwillingly, they travel to the Middle East in search of their unknown relatives, and during their search they learn the harsh realities and dark secrets from their mother’s life. Every arrival at a new village unveils new secrets, and slowly they begin to learn of their mother’s traumatic ordeal leading up to their birth and emigration to Canada.

Based on the play Scorched by Wajdi Mouawad, this heart-wrenching story unfolds amidst the brutality of civil war in a fictive country that could be Lebanon. INCENDIES asks if – and how – it is possible to break the circle of violence and retribution.

Denis Villeneuve was born in Quebec, Canada, in 1967. He has won the Canada’s Genie Award for Best Director twice, for MAELSTRÖM in 2001 and for POLYTECHNIQUE in 2010.
