GEOMEN TANGYI SONYEO / WITH A GIRL OF BLACK SOIL

DQ winner in Fribourg 2008
Jeon Soo-ill
Corée du Sud, 2007
89 min., couleurs

The film depicts the family life of a nine year old girl, living with her father and her mentally retarded brother in a mining village. The growing responsibility for her brother and her everyday life become unbearable: the father loses his job at the mine and - after some additional blows of fate - increasingly resorts to alcohol. The maternal, caring attitude of the girl finally leads to radical decisions.
The powerful images of the dying industrial landscape reflect the story in an impressive way. The film delivers a convincing and respectful representation of the protagonists, whose integrity is never betrayed. At the same time, the director has created a work of global validity.

In Suicide Designer (2003), Jeon Soo-il depicted a urban and trendy generation struggling against vacuity. In With the Girl of Black Soil, he creates a more classical social film, both dark and powerful. The style is sparse, the mineral countryside filmed without artifice. Numerous static shots draw the spectator into the film though several key sequences: the drunken father, tragic prisoner of his misfortunes, slides along a huge scree with a deafening sound, crossing the frame from top to bottom in his fall; in another scene, the little girl exits the frame, letting us become the sole witnesses of her father’s agony. Despite the actress’ young age, You Youn-mi’s remarkable interpretation endows the film with overwhelming gravity and strength.
