Markus, a member of the volunteer fire squad, lives in a little town outside of Berlin with his wife, Ella. They’ve loved each other ever since they were children and live a happy and undramatic life together.
One day Markus travels to a neighbouring town to participate in a fire safety seminar. After a rousing night on the town, Markus wakes up in another woman’s apartment. He can barely remember the events of the previous night, and his attempts to do so lead to a passionate affair. His love for Ella is firm, but no matter how hard he tries, he can’t seem to manage to go back to his old life.
This film has a realistic, documentary-like feel to it which is enhanced by the use of amateur actors. These actors are chosen, in part, because their own lives share some similarities with the lives of the characters they play. The director’s observational skills and the film’s visual style manage to beautifully capture the small, intense moments and translate them into strong human emotion. Longing is a film about infidelity that awakens our raw emotions.
Valeska Griesbach (b. 1968) is from Bremen. She studied philosophy and literature before she began film studies at the Film Academy in Vienna. There she was taught by, among others, Mikael Haneke. In her final exam film at the Academy, MEIN STERN, which was very well-received, she began developing her own method for working with amateur actors.
