Plzen 2004 by Natalia Soler, Catalan Federation, Spain (English)
In the heart of Europe, Plzen, the city of the best beer of the world. In front of the window of my hotel room, the cathedral. I could jump to its tower from where I´m staying. Apart from the beer and the cathedral, there´s the cinema. Czech cinema. I´m facing the festival FINALE PLZEN, the festival devoted to the films from the heart of europe
Karlovy Vary´s little brother is growing bigger with the years. They have a kind and responsible organization which nothing has to envy to the heir of the family. Plzen film fest is focused on the indigenous productions, although there´s place as well for the rest of the europe´s outstanding films. In special mention, the sections devoted to the regard back to the past, to the films of the czech collective memories, or to the legendary animations developed by Jan Švankmajer (with an interesting exhibition of his work included) and to Večerniček, a children´s programme in the czech television at the „before going to bed meantime“. In the official section, the best czech films of the last year, amongst them the DON QUIJOTE award from our jury, the film Sentiment from Tomáš Hejtmánek, a terribly deep and beautiful movie born from a meeting Hejtmánek had with a czech cult director, Jiři Kodet. My experience at the festival was really nice, not only by the personal warm and kind treating but also for the chance to see those wonderful animations i was waiting to see so much. Also the possibility to see the czech films was an interesting experience according to the fact that is not really easy, not to say impossible, that those films will have any distribution back home. All the commodities and requestings were facilited to us, in a accurated organization. Really recommendable the view of the city from the tower of the cathedral and the walk to the further parts of Plzen. Within the pride to keep the secret of the best beer of the world, Plzen has the merit to be the place for the younger one, which will be soon as big as his brother from Karlovy Vary.
